Flanders Poppy

Flower of the Month - November 2019

This photo was taken by CHGC Member Geoff at Pozieres, France, the site of one of the greatest battles ever fought by Australian soldiers. Over seven weeks in mid-1916, at the Battle of the Somme, and very near to where these poppies were growing, the Australian Imperial Force suffered 23,000 casualties, 6,700 of whom died.

KINGDOM: Plantae

ORDER: Ranunculales

FAMILY:  Papaveraceae

GENUS:  Papaver

A favourite heirloom flower and one of the most widely recognised flowers for its significance in honouring fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day. It's always one of the first spring flowers to bloom on the battlefields of France, and it's commonly said to symbolise the blood of lost soldiers.

A few years ago seeds were distributed far and wide by Maria Bell. If you are lucky, maybe your poppies are coming up year after year. Mine are!  Yippee

Images from Sue Young are current year's flowers.

2019 Christmas Function

It is all happening again! The 2019 Christmas Party will be held at the Greenhouse Tavern (on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Bray St). Come along at 12 for a 12:30pm start on Tuesday 10 December.

There will be raffles, ... including the drawing of the Mega Raffle (chainsaw, hedge trimmer and battery pack is first prize and there is a pot filled brimful with goodies from the latest Mr Fothergill's tool range for second prize), a lucky door prize, a most delicious Christmas fare lunch, frivolity, and there will be presentations to the most successful entrants in this year's competition table, along with a random draw from all members who participated during the year.

Christmas, would not be Christmas if we didn't have a prezzie to open. We'll be having a Kris Kringle once again - for those who may not be completely sure just how a Kris Kringle works, it is like this.

  • If you would like to participate, you buy a gift for someone else to the value of $10 ... you pop it into the appropriate Kris Kringle Sack when you arrive at lunch and then, like magic, Santa and her elves will later distribute presents to all who brought a present.
  • There will be 3 sacks at the Welcome Table - Ladies, Gentlemen, and Gender Fluid.
  • If you buy a gift that would be suitable for either a lady or a man ... you pop it into the Gender Fluid sack and when it is your turn to select a gift ... you select from the gender fluid sack.
  • If you buy a gift that is only suitable for a lady, then you pop your gift in the Ladies' only sack and you select your gift from the Ladies' Sack.
  • If you buy a gift that is only suitable for a gentleman, then you pop that gift into the Gentlemen Only Sack and when it is time for you to select a gift, you take it from the Gentlemen's Sack.
  • If you are a lady and you buy a gentleman's only gift - be warned you might end up with a bottle of Californian Poppy for yourself!

The Mega Raffle will be drawn by some rather special guests. You will have been busy selling your tickets over the last month or so and returned all the books and money to the Treasurer. This raffle was always intended to be drawn at the Christmas party however...... our venue wasn't available on our first date choice but it was decided to still run with the draw being conducted at our Christmas Party, not the date advertised.

Cost for the function is $25 for 2019 financial members and if you would like to bring a guest (non member) the cost will $35 per person.

Could you please RSVP either before, or at the November meeting. You may however, wish to pay directly into the Club's bank account. Those details are:

Westpac Bank

BSB. 032-585
Account Number. 233729
Account Name. Coffs Harbour Garden Club Inc.

It is imperative that we have the correct number of attendees to this function... it wouldn't be a good thing if we had too many people and not enough pudding! When you do RSVP, if you have special dietary requirements, could you please advise so we can pass this important information on to the wonderful chef at the Greenhouse Tavern, so he can prepare something rather special just for you.
