Community Radio in Syd - Alive 90.5FM

This community radio station - Alive 90.5FM  is fantastic and covers the areas of Parramatta, Holroyd and the Hills. On a recent trip 'to the big smoke' I happened on this station and wanted to share it's existence with any members who may be travelling in this region of Sydney.

There is, of course, the opportunity to Podcast via your computer. Visit the link above for details on how to do this.

Vivien the segment host will be joined by Judy Horton to talk about anything to do with gardening
starting this week - 31st May. Judy will be a regular guest on Garden Gig around 12.30 each Friday.
Judy among many other things is the editor of  the Yates Garden Guide so she knows her 'stuff' and has worked at Yates for sixteen years in their Communications area.

18 May Meeting with Guest Speaker Gwyn Clarke

Guest Speaker Gwyn Clarke was very informative. Her illustrated Australian native plants talk gave our membership many different examples of what can be grown in our region. Gwyn has been very successful in her plant selection for her property which is located on a sandstone ridge around 20 kms out of Nana Glen. A real change from her previous location on the slopes of a 700m Mt Painter in the ACT! Gwyn and her husband, Geoff have successfully expanded the endemic regions of some species found growing naturally on their virgin block of land; some of which were thought not to grown so far north.

Gwyn certainly knows her subject, both her and Geoff have received an Award in 2001 from the Australian Native Plants Society of Australia. This award was established in 1983 and is presented to people who have made an outstanding contribution to the knowledge of Australian plants. Since 1987 this Award has been made in both professional and amateur categories - Gwyn and Geoff received theirs in the amateur category.

Once again an excellent choice of Guest Speaker at a meeting.

Airport Grooming and Pruning

Whilst Gavin is no doubt enjoying himself in Hawaii, the other members of the Airport Garden Working Team soldiered on in his absence. We had four attendees, Peter, Simon, Jim and Helen. There was not a lot to do, just the odd weed, and a wee bit of shape pruning. Notwithstanding the season, the gardens look quite vibrant. We simply did a bit of tidying up. Next month, the Council want the Garden Working Team to attend a short seminar on OH&S, followed by morning tea. Peter will speak more on this at our next Garden Club Meeting.
