Vale Patron Rhona Brooks

Sadly on 28 December 2011, we lost our wonderful Patron, Rhona Brooks, who was President of our Garden Club for 14 years. Rhona was a very special and inspirational lady who guided the Garden Club from the late 80's through to 2001. Her enthusiastic leadership encouraged others to get involved in the club and become dedicated members.

During Rhona's Presidency the Garden Club prospered and she organised many wonderful trips to places like Canberra for Floriade, Tasmania to explore that beautiful Island and a visit to Melbourne for their exciting Annual Garden Expo, to name but a few.

Rhona was always looking for ways to contribute to the community and it was she who led us all to work in the Airport Garden, planting, weeding, pruning and digging! In 2000 we were invited to help redesign the Airport Garden after extensive upgrading had taken place and when it was all completed we joined Rhona again in looking after the new low maintenance gardens. A much easier task!

In 1989 Rhona and the Garden Club took over the running of the Garden Competition from the Advocate who had organised it the previous year. A tireless worker, before the days of computers, Rhona prepared the Judges Book and the Stewards Book all by hand, and organised us all as stewards and drivers.

As well as her involvement with the Garden Club Rhona was the President of the Friends of the Botanic Garden for two years and was instrumental in organising some wonderful events in the Botanic Garden. She was also on the Tidy Towns Committee and the Australia Day Committee.

She was a dedicated worker for her community and an inspiration to us all and was recognised for her amazing contribution to the Garden Club by being made a Life Member.

Since leaving Coffs Harbour in the early 2000's to be near family in Queensland she has been a generous and interested Patron, visiting the Club whenever she was back in Coffs. She was a very dear friend and we will miss her enormously.
